What is the AFM?

Just as doctors, lawyers, teachers, airline pilots and other professionals have done, professional musicians long ago developed an organization to address and advance their interests. Yes, we are "the Musicians Union": Local 353 of the 90,000-member American Federation of Musicians (AFM). The AFM has been serving the professional musician for more than 100 years. Changing constantly with the times, today’s AFM is vastly different from that of only a few years ago. Seeking to provide more and better employment, but also looking "beyond the gig," we have developed some great new services and financial benefits that musicians want and need today. We’re a solid organization and we’re permanent. Our Long Beach Area Association, representing the AFM in Greater Long Beach, was chartered by the AFM in 1914. The Welcome mat is out! We're here to offer you a helping hand, open doors, and provide you with vital information about the music industry and local opportunities. Expand your horizons! Whether you’re a music student, part-time or full-time professional, we’re here to talk with you about membership. So, check out the website, then give us a call!
